review 1: I adored this book. It is the story of a young woman who is forced to raise three young boys while her husband is away during WWII. They are her stepsons, but she loves them as their mother. She has to hold the home and her boys together as the world crumbles about her. The novel is about motherhood, and about women. The war, politics, the Holocaust - all of that takes place off-stage and the focus is on the home front and what it means to be a mother. I thought is was brilliant.
review 2: You don't often come across a book set in WWII that is told from the German viewpoint. When you do, the characters are either heroes or villains. In this book, we see the war through the eyes of ordinary German citizens just trying to survive. The author started her familie
... mores' story and grew from there. The main male character is a widowed doctor who avoids service as long as he can. Finally drafted, his new wife is left to care for his 3 young sons. I found myself wondering how I would have held up under similar circumstances. A good read. less
