review 1: Interesting world and characters that I'd like to see Jacqueline Carey write rather than this author. As the books progressed they went from engaging to tolerable to disappointing. Yelena finding out something new about magic seemed to be the solution to every illogical plot twist in book 3. The increasingly sarcastic dialog did not match the colder, straightforward first person narrative or the seriousness of the events. Ferde was a nickname one of his victims called him to herself and to Yelena, but that name was used when unrelated characters referred to him. Lots of sloppy things like that by the third book. Disappointing.

... more far.Update: Books 2 & 3 probably should be more like 2 stars but I'll leave my rating. I really enjoyed book 1. I thought the story was interesting and the characters were well written. I don't know how characters that were so rich and vibrant in the first book can become so dull and one dimensional in subsequent books. I ended this series with a resounding 'Meh'. less
