review 1: This book is by a Dutch author, written in Dutch and first published in 2007. The English translation seems quite serviceable. I first became aware of the story by seeing the motion picture adaptation, which was a Dutch film with the spoken dialogue in Dutch, so watching with subtitles was necessary. The story takes place in New Zealand, and the movie (which I highly recommend seeing) was filmed there --- a lot of the outdoor scenery in it is breathtakingly stunning. I was impressed with the film and enjoyed it, and that provided motivation to obtain and read the book (alas, it’s not easily found and readily available, which is a shame). The basic story is that in the early fifties (after World War II) a group of Dutch brides-to-be on their way to a new life in New Ze... morealand, instead of taking a ship for six weeks, are offered the alternative of traveling as passengers on a Dutch Royal Airlines plane (with propellers --- this is before jet engines) competing in an airplane race that’ll take about fifty hours. A striking young man and three of the women come to know one another on the plane. In New Zealand two of the women marry (as arranged and planned in advance) but one doesn’t. The man --- who never marries --- ends up having an important, long-lasting impact on the very different but interwoven lives of all three of the women. The film turned about to be amazingly true to the book, but as one would expect, there’s a higher degree of character development in the written version. In fact, I’d have to say that the depth of the character development is probably the novel’s greatest strength. If I could I’d rate this here with four-and-a-half stars. Both the movie and the book are worth experiencing.
review 2: A much more detailed view into the lives of three women and one mysterious cowboy. Found the comparison of youth to old age very compelling and of course, the young women beneath the old women were still alive and well. It was interesting to unravel odd behaviour to its source. Felt so badly for Frank. Also felt Ada came a long way, but not far enough. Poor Frank! Also, Marjorie still came across pretty insane despite her history. Esther I could understand, but Marjorie? I'm surprised with all her tension that she wasn't the one to have a coronary first:). This book brings home another powerful message: to not let fears or other peoples expectations rule your life. Thought about that one a few days before adding...hmmm. less

ROMANTIC. Loved the characters and story. It's the Dutch version of the NOTEBOOK.
