review 1: A brief, thoughtful novel told in free verse, this is set during the Japanese Relocation of WWII. A Seattle family must pack up and leave for an assembly center, then a relocation camp, and you can feel their frustration and confusion. Told by the high school-aged daughter, the other characters are just as interesting: older brother who joins the 442nd, grandfather who can somehow make roses grow in the dust, father who was arrested at first and joined them at camp a frightened man, and mother who is trying to hold them all together. But compared with the many other great novels on this subject, this is good but not great. It doesn't seem to add anything new, and is not as palpable as novels written by those who were there.
review 2: Dust of Eden by author Mari
... moreko Nagai is a poignant and heart quivering book, that was provided for me to read on my Kindle Fire by publisher Albert Whitman & Company, via Net Galley. The black and white cover, photo credit provided by the National Archives, immediately captured my attention with their sadness and heartache. While the author indeed made an extreme effort at attempting to be unique with verse, this to me as the reader was my only downfall. It made what was already a short interesting book choppy, immensely shorter. I thought historically however, that this is a superb enlightening read, and I took a step back out of my usual reading genre, and did overall enjoy Dust of Eden. I would definitely recommend this read, and I would read more from author Mariko Nagai. less

Excellent telling of the Japanese internment through the use of poetry and letters.

Couldn't this 5 stars because of a lack of sources.
