review 1: I would have given this book a four-star review but, as many other readers have commented, the chapter on Second Life ("Wizards of Odd") killed it for me. I'd recommend this book to any of my librarian pals, with a strong suggestion to skip over that chapter. I'm actually kind of surprised that Marilyn Johnson's editor let the book go to press without trimming some of her excessive gushing about this online simulation program. What's more exciting than listening to someone describe their avatar, its accessories, and sim socialization in detail? Um, school libraries, for one. I enjoyed the parts of the book that described what's happening in public libraries of all sizes, blogging librarians, and the "Connecticut Four" who objected to a government request for information (u... morender the Patriot Act) that violated their patrons' privacy. I only wish that Johnson had cast a wider net and included some other types of libraries and librarians in her book. But overall, this is a welcome shout-out to librarians everywhere. We really are kind of awesome.
review 2: The subject of this book is fascinating to me, but I didn't love all the chapters equally. The first couple and the last couple were the most interesting to me. In the middle, the author focuses on virtual libraries as created in Second Life... and Second Life just kind of weirds me out. (I watched the documentary, Life 2.0, on Netflix, and it's just too weird for me.) She seems to have reaaaaaally gotten into that, at least for research purposes. Also, she seemed to focus most of her energy on librarians who are doing highly unusual library-related things. That's fine, but she spent a lot of time talking about their sexual orientation or their transgender identies, and I thought that some of that was entirely unnecessary, and even a bit sensationalist.Overall there are some interesting topics and it certainly shows you that not all librarians are the same. less

Not very interesting unless you want to know about the inner workings of libraries.

The best thing about it is the title and cover art, both of which are really great.

Liked the librarians, loved their means of thwarting the PATRIOT Act.
