review 1: I've never read any of Marilynne Robinson so I can happily comment on the previous questions "Can this book be a stand alone" YES absolutely , Gilead was never on my radar. It will be now! I have started and stopped so many books this year for various reasons most often because the author's trying so damn hard to show me how intelligent they are , or they make the same point over and over again or they're just terrible however I was transported not only by the story but by her beautiful crafting of a sentence and a thought. It took me longer to read this book than it should have because I kept going back and re reading and absorbing her beautiful prose. I'll read all of this wonderful author now. Thank You Marilynne Robinson.
review 2: I listened to this a
... morend now want to read the hard copy. Lila is the young wife of the elderly reverend of one of my favorite books, Gilead. It is a grave, lyrical, hard book from the point of view a young, damaged woman, learning to trust, to understand a whole new way of life, to accept her past and the people in it. The reader just didn't have Lila's voice and inflections right for me, but I got past that by imagining the voice I felt she should have. It was worth it. less
