review 1: I have previously read Marilynne Robinson's novels 'Gilead' and 'Home', which I enjoyed tremendously. This was my first attempt at a non-fiction writing. She writes excellently, and I appreciated much of her thinking and commentary in these essays on American life -- topics like education, politics, religion etc. The only criticism I would have is that not all of it resonated with me as a Canadian -- although also much of it did.
review 2: My copy from BN has to go back as it arrived damaged. I did start it, though. I usually read for an hour or so before bed, but this one cannot be for that.
