review 1: I have previously read Marilynne Robinson's novels 'Gilead' and 'Home', which I enjoyed tremendously. This was my first attempt at a non-fiction writing. She writes excellently, and I appreciated much of her thinking and commentary in these essays on American life -- topics like education, politics, religion etc. The only criticism I would have is that not all of it resonated with me as a Canadian -- although also much of it did.
review 2: My copy from BN has to go back as it arrived damaged. I did start it, though. I usually read for an hour or so before bed, but this one cannot be for that. No, she is in full on mode that gets your blood pressure rising and thoughts racing if you're of her particular belief system. I was incredibly surprised.
