review 1: If you weren't a desperately enthusiastic socialist (as I was when I was younger) you may miss some of the more subtle references scattered throughout the book. That's all I've got to say about the book, which should tell you enough about how (for me) the story was a bit wishy washy, with lots going on; however nothing really went on and by the time the book rolled round to it's conclusion I was quietly relieved. I've not read a book that left me feeling nothing for a very long time, but I can't exactly put my finger on what it was...puzzling.
review 2: While I enjoyed this book, I don't think it holds a candle to A Short History of Tractors in the Ukraine or some of her other books. Humorous, but not as humorous. I didn't quite get the title. There are pets in... more this book but it feels contrived, the title and the pets in the story. The characters are caricatures and don't ring as true as in her other books. It strikes me that this book might be a formulaic response to her publishers request - this has worked in the past, do it again - but her heart wasn't in it. less
