review 1: I really enjoyed reading the book, it was a lighthearted comedy but also gave me something to think about (i won't say what as I don't want to spoil it for anyone else). My only criticism - and it is a very small one - is that usual I can tell who the main character will end up with by the first chapter if not the first couple of pages, but I don't expect Georgie to end up with who she does, and a bit disappointed by who she does end up with. But hey ho, that's life and actually brought a bit of realism to the story.
review 2: This is a three star books that really aims and tries to be a four star book but misses it in a few places. Marina Lewycka put a lot of characters and a lot of different things in the book and tried to tie it all together. Sometimes it fe
... morelt like it would have been better if she just picked one story and told that really well. But at the same time I appreciated it for what it was because she gave you the feeling you get when you are driving down a quiet neighborhood street at night and the lights in all the houses are on and everyone has their curtains pulled back and you can just peek into all of these random lives. I found the side characters to be more interesting than the main character Georgie. I found Georgie really dull and depressing in the beginning but maybe she evolved a bit or started to grow on me or she just slowly got out of her shell so she wasn't quite so depressing by the end of the book. I also appreciated that the author attempted to use this book to shed light on a lot of the issues that senior citizens have in our society and how easily they can lose so many rights because we're not paying attention to them and we're ready to just throw them in nursing homes. When an 81 year old Jewish neighbor compares the Holocaust camps to the likes of the nursing home she was put in you know there is something really wrong with our society. I kind of want to go volunteer in a nursing home and play card games and read books after reading this book. Anyway, the book had enough cute moments to make it worth a read. less
