review 1: This fictionalized story delves into the topic of a woman dressing as a man to join The Civil War. Sarah Edmonds wasn't the only woman to do this but was one of the more famous individuals due to her duties and after-war actions. This book paints a story that while intertwined with fact-based research does carry a fictional story that the reader, a young adult, would find interesting and address many of their own questions. The ending does take great liberties with the truth which the author admits.I do believe many ya would enjoy this story and use it as a launching point to learn more about Sarah and her fellow women solidiers.
review 2: I adored this book. I feel like there is not much need for me to go back and mention the same summaries as other reviewers
... more. I would just like to express my opinion on how the author changed the last portion of the book to suit her need to include some kind of closure for Sarah and Jerome. I am beyond thankful that she completed this chapter. It does little harm to the rest of the book, especially since it is a fictionalized account of her true story. Additional facts are presented after the story. Yet, it helped me cope with the ending of a really great book. I became emotionally attached to Thomas and her struggle. I became invested in her feelings for Jerome. I wanted them to get together because I am particularly fond of (ok, obsess over) happy endings where everything falls into place. But this is based on a real life women, and in real life, things do not always turn out the way people think they should. So, I am thankful that at least fictional Sarah, with her strong feelings for her best friend and only confident in the war (besides her horse) was able to meet Jerome once more, even if it was much later in life, with previous relationships behind them. Anyway, I just wanted to contribute this whole mess of feelings I have from just finished an incredible book. (Literally, I started this book this morning, and I finished it about 30 minutes ago) less
