Behind the Lives
review 1: This is a bit too full of the tough side of life for me. Yes there is some decency and love but the beginning was full of callousness, brutality, crime, maliciousness... And yes it got my attention. There is probably a lesson in it but I couldn't make myself keep going. I wouldn't recommend it for teens but I think a lot who are growing up in the Once were warriors neighbourhoods would be drawn to it.
review 2: I really liked this story -- it was well written, and I didn't have much trouble with the slang (maybe I have read too many English/Aussie books?? grin) -- Anyway, I found shades of The Outsiders by S.E. ... more did not HATE Tama as much as I would like to. He did things that redeemed himself at least a little bit. He risked getting caught to take two people to the hospital, showed that he CAN think of someone besides himself. Made me have hope for him. However, I also wanted the book to end with a brutal scene in prison, but alas -- I haven't decided if I am going to hunt down the other books in the series yet or not, but I will keep an eye out for other books by this author if I see them around. less
