review 1: I've really liked this story, especially the setting, the starship traveling the universe. I also liked the way the rose, the star and what was happening to the characters were connected.Adam is a cadet and he's infatuated with his officer Evan. He thinks Evan is not interested in him and pretty frustrated by what's going on. He has good friends, but he's gay and they are not, so he feels a bit lonely and he finds his peace in an arboretum, sitting on a bench and contemplating a beautiful rose that seems to reflect his feelings. The mission his ship is accomplishing is critical and Adam finds himself in a difficult position.But. But this story could have been 100 pages long and I would have read them all, even 150 or 200. The plot of the young handsome cadet and the hunky ... moreofficer was so interesting. It's really a simple and almost classical plot and although the story was short, there still were a lot of details. I really really wish we had Evan's point of view, I wanted to hear him check Adam out, being attracted to the younger man, being conflicted about him and then recognizing Adam's attraction and on and on.So I'm not satisfied because I liked the story too much, go figure! I hope there's a sequel, because the story has a lot of potential.
review 2: I was very leery to read this, as I don't normally like "space" books. It's very short, so gave it a try. I ended up loving it, and then wishing it was longer. The fact that the language of the flowers was an integral part was so fascinating (and I'll admit - I looked it up, to see what they stood for. White roses, innocence. Yellow tipped with red, falling in love. Red buds, falling in love for the first time. Yep, I checked). Because of the length, the story goes really quick, and then I was disappointed there wasn't more. So, a pink rose to Mark Alders, for an enjoyable story. less
