review 1: As a debut novel, this book was well written, had an interesting character development, and an interesting plot. I felt the pace of the novel, although better towards the middle-end, didn't quite draw me in in the beginning. I like the morbid element that somehow changes with the character development, finally reaching a more hopeful light. All-in-all, a pretty interesting read, but I just think it lacked substance - more could have been done.
review 2: I think this book is well done for the genre; lots of coincidences, of course, but overall the story struck me as somewhat different and engaging (plowed through it in two nights, not wanting to put it down). I can't give it more than three stars, though, because of all the very graphic depictions of physical to
... morerture. Yes, the book is about an "inquisitor," but he's supposed to be one who works with psychology, not physical pain, and in my view there is way too much of the latter described in way too much detail. I picked this book up specifically because I like a good thriller, but one without too much blood and gore, and I was disappointed on that score. But if you can get past that, you may enjoy this. less

A very interesting book. Not what I expected. Also a very unique and different lead character.

Meh. I didn't hate it, but I sure don't understand what all the hype was about.
