review 1: This book starts out strong. Excellent background on the teams (NY Giants and Baltimore Colts) and top players competing in the 1958 NFL championship game. I especially enjoyed the chapter on Raymond Berry. The story of the first half of the game is engrossing. Then as the game became tighter, better-played, and more exciting (second half), the author didn't keep up with it. Bowden usually writes books that take about three to five years to research and put together. He said he enjoyed writing this one, which took far less time. The writing dropped off so much in the latter part of the book that it seemed like the author completed this one hurriedly so he could go to another project. That's what it felt like to me.
review 2: A great sports book that's short an
... mored interesting. I liked this book for how it described the players and coaches (and all of them come off well except for Frank Gifford, which doesn't surprise me) and the evolution of professional football - all set in the context of the time period. The book did drag a little while describing the game itself, but it's a minor quibble. Forget Superbowl XLIV (ETA: especially after watching the game) - I want to go back to the 1950s before money forever changed the game. less
