review 1: Imagine James Bond in Elizabethan England, and you pretty much have this. The main character gets caught and tortured more times than I can count and yet always walks away. It also has one of the most viscous visions of the Fair Folk that I've seen to this day. They are portrayed as horrific and as inhuman as an alien race, with several unexpected twists. Parts of this narrative was tedious, I'm looking at you - Grace the foolish stumbling girl who causes extra problems with every breath. And parts were a surprise, Doctor Dee will be performing the role of special weapons expert Q??? NICE! However, this is a bleak tale, and over and over again the characters repeat their mantra of all for queen and England, and don't let anyone know just how awful this world of evil fay... more folk is. (yet if they actually DID tell everyone what they were up against, then they could all fight together instead of huddling in corners mumbling like a Lovecraftian saga... just saying.)
review 2: For the vast majority of the book I was going for a solid 3.5 out of 5, but goodreads doesn't let me do that. Thankfully, the last 5-6 chapters were enough to make sure that this is not the end of the adventures, hints towards a larger story arc are the hook that catches us all. Some are never tempted by the bait of an explanation but there was enough mystery to the ending that I shall indeed be following Master Swyfte's adventures to the end! less

This was a very good book but it took me a few chapters to get into it.

Got to page 125. Didn't like the style, didn't like the banter.
