review 1: This is a concise and approachable theology of the church. Dever writes with clarity and passion, and makes his case for the Gospel of Jesus Christ. Because, at the center of the church is the Word of God. Without the Word of God, there is no Church. Drawing from this conviction and others, and experiences as a pastor of Capitol Hill Baptist Church, he draws out his convictions backed by scripture of what a church is and should be. Well worth the read for anyone considering the implications of what the Church is and should be.
review 2: Dever strikes again with a clear and concise summary of the theology of the church throughout history. A majority of the book is dedicated to what an Evangelical church is, and a smaller portion dedicated to his understanding of... more how Baptist belief and traditions hold most closely to a biblical understanding of the church. Dever is skilled in communicating his opponents position on issues, in ways they would agree with, and subsequently writing about how his understanding of the scripture contradicts that position. This is the essence of a good argument, and Dever does some of that in this book. The best part of the book in my opinion is the first half, which is basically the same as several other books Dever as authored or co-authored. (The Deliberate Church, What is a Healthy Church.) The second half of the books is also worth reading, if your are interested at all in Baptist history and how it differs from other faith traditions. I would suggest this book or another one of Dever's books on the church to anyone looking for a greater understanding of ecclesiology. less
