review 1: With Gimenez, you can never go wrong. I needed a book which was fast, action packed and intellectually stimulating. And I got it all and then some. Picked up a little Spanish!!!Ola!!!Basically, this is a book about Bode Bonner, the Governor of Texas, who loved politics more than he loved his wife. In his younger life, Bode was a star American Football player with all the trimmings. Looks, money, ego and enough aggression to get him through University. He is a Texan through and through. From his Southern drawl, his cowboy clothes through to his choice of cuisine. He's married to Linsay for over 25 years. They were happy staying at Bode's family ranch. Had a beautiful and athletic daughter, Becca, and a slew of Mexican help. Trouble started when Bode was elected the Governor... more of Texas 8 years before and they had to move to Austin. I mean when all the town LURVE's you, what a man to do, but run for Governor of the great state of Texas!!!Fast forward to present day...Bode is governor with big problems of national importance. He is loved by the natives of Texas, hated by the rest of America and the Democrats but he is basically a content man. Far from it. Bode is restless. Wants more than he has. One last "Touchdown"! The Presidency. His mistress, Mandy. Light! Camera! Action! His wife, Lindsay, has had enough of being in the room and not being seen. She wants more out of her life. Wants to give more. To do more. To matter. To be useful. To have a sense of purpose. Her move to the Colonias give her just that. Enter the great drug lord, Enrique a.k.a "El Diablo" who lusts after her. A young tall, dark and handsome Mexican and Harvard-educated Dr, Jesse, and we have ourselves a mouthwatering juicy plot!!!Needless to say, when Linsay is taken by El Diablo to be used as bait to lure Bode to his cmpound after Bode killed his son, Jesuis, Bode rose to the occassion and became the man Linsay married. In the ensuing pages, Enrique is killed by Bode in his own compund and Jesse dies from a gun shot wound inflicted by El Diablo's bandits. Bode and Linsay head back to Austin to rebuild their life.I loved the book because it had universal themes of love, hope, greed, social decay caused by poverty and drugs and most of all, the pursuit of happiness. Sometimes we might have it all, money, power, the love of a good wife or husband but if your soul is not at peace, is not joyful with what you have, you will look to the outside to find fullfilment.
review 2: As with other books by this author, this one did not disappoint. I will be honest and say that, when the book first started, I was rather torn. The plot takes a bit to get going, and I wasn't sure exactly where it was going to go. But, his building of the characters was enough to keep me interested. My only complaint, (though it's not worth the deduction of a star,) was that the ending was very rushed. less

A good story line but a lot of the book was too political. His other books were better.
