review 1: Content-Area Crossover: Science>Mammals>Habitat>Endangered Animals>Global warmingFiction Twin text: Red Knit Cap Girl To The Rescue, by Naoko Stoop, 2013.Connection: First, I would read the fiction book Red Knit Cap Girl to the Rescue, by Naoko Stoop. The Red Knit Cap Girl and friends find a lost polar bear cub and decide to help him. They travel all the way to the North Pole, where the cub is reunited with its mother. I chose this book because it’s a great anticipatory set to introduce polar bears and specifically their habitat to students. After reading the story I would engage students in conversation and create a K-W-L chart. Discussing what they know about polar bears, what they want to learn about polar bears, and any other lingering questions they may have. I ... morewould use my non-fiction text Polar Bears by Mark Newman, to teach the students facts about polar bears and specifically their habitat. After reading the non-fiction text we would refer back to our K-W-L chart to see if we found the answers to our questions. Extension: The book explains that polar bears are endangered animals due to global warming. As an extension project I would ask students to create a poster that raises awareness about global warming, which is causing polar bears to become endangered. The poster must include facts about polar bears and ways we can reduce global warming.
review 2: I truly enjoyed this nonfiction book about polar bears. The photography was a great compliment to the book and the facts were presented in a straight-forward, interesting, and captivating way. The first two sections offer a wonderful contrast - 'Polar bears are big' and 'Polar bears are tiny'. I especially enjoyed learning that polar bears are excellent swimmers. The book also includes an author's note, sources, additional resources, and more facts. Just the way I like my nonfiction!Highly recommended for students in grades 2 - 4. I hope that Mark Newman continues creating great nonfiction books for children! less
