review 1: I have to say that this book has opened my eyes to the level of work so many have done to keep our world a healthier place. Granted - I have never been so paranoid to eat or travel - but by god this was a solid read. The format kept the pace well throughout the history of different outbreaks and how they were managed - keeping it to smaller snippets allowed me to take the book in chunks. Very helpful when I have a young child that wants my attention!I think this should be required reading for anyone who needs a reminder of the sacrifice needed to make their world a better place.
review 2: It's about 3-1/2 stars, really - fantastic subject (though I am an epi so I am a wee bit biased) - but, oddly written. A fascinating history told in (sometimes clunky) vignett
... morees. It took me a lot longer to read than I imagined because it was so choppy I couldn't really get into it or care about anyone mentioned. But the stories told are great - a look into the wide range of issues facing public health workers and the political machinations that play a role as well. If you like hearing an overview of strange diseases, or are in/considering public health, specifically epi - it is worth a read. less

I very much enjoyed the vignettes about the CDC, but I found the disjointed narrative difficult.

Fantastic book, even if you don't love infectious diseases as much as I do. :)

A history of the Epidemic Intelligence Service and the work they do.

Interesting stuff but the book lacks focus and reads like a summary.

Amazing read if you are into public health and inspiring stories!
