review 1: It happened again – I read another great Christian mystery! I received a copy of THE RELUCTANT DETECTIVE by Martha Ockley from Lion Fiction via Kregel. It is part of the Faith Morgan mystery series, the first in the series actually. Martha Ockley has a smooth way of creating pictures with her imagination and words. It is almost like watching television, and this book would make a great television series. I did read the second book in the series and loved it, so I was eager to dive into this one. It did not, of course, disappoint. At all. Faith is still an adorable, lovable character who will have the reader rooting for her.I’m the type of person who always wants to guess who committed the crime – a murder in this case – but then gets caught up in the story ... moreor is just too mind-tangled to figure it out. This was another of those books. I was baffled, in a good way, right up until the end. I’m sure other readers will be more adept at uncovering the truth.I highly recommend this book to fans of Christian literature and mysteries. This has a sound plot and believable characters. Never once did I shake my head in disbelief.
review 2: On her return to Winchester, Faith Morgan, newly ordained priest in the Church of England, witnesses the dramatic death of a fellow priest during a service - poisoned with pesticide mixed with the communion wine. One of the police officers called to the scene is Ben Shorter, Faith's ex-boyfriend. They trained together before Faith's calling took a different turn. At the request of the Bishop of Winchester, Faith stays on to look after the church at Little Worthy, where there have been some problems, and soon finds that the murder may involve not only the Bishop's family but her own nephew...This is another well written Martha Ockley suspense novel. This book takes us back before "The Advent of Murder" to when Faith Morgan is newly ordained and comes to Worthy as the new vicar. As we learn about Faith, and her former life as a police officer, we find that she loves a good mystery!This book is very easy to read, and hard to put down. It is full of suspense and will keep you guessing until the end. If you love a good mystery this is the book for you. This is the first book in the Faith Morgan series, and I highly recommend it if you are into that type of genre. less
