review 1: Read the book! The book was a quick read that held my interest. The author's mechanics of good writing were not what they should have been, but there was not a lot of 'between you and I', for which the author deserves a button! Except for Max and his partner, the characters were flat. Still, I kept reading, which meant there was something special about the book. The people of Seattle suffered a 9.2 earthquake and multiple aftershocks. The author's description of the seismic activity held me spellbound. The HAM radio operators and Max and his partner fed communications to rescue teams making the radio operators the real heroes of the book. When I was a young child, my best friend and playmate was my uncle. He was three years my senior so naturally I believed eve... morerything and anything he told me however outrageous it might be. As we played one day, he told me that the earth on which we were standing might split open and we would fall all the way to China. I grabbed his hand and would not let go all that day. If the ground split and we fell from Mississippi to China, we were falling together! That memory, sparked by the book, was the 'something special' that made me like the book so much.Thank you, Ms. Talbott, for a good read.
review 2: This is a good YA story, but not my cup of tea. With that said, I read it. I found some of the peripheral characters much more substantial than the main characters. There were some really good parts that I got into, but for the most part, it seemed to drag. After I read it, I discovered that it was written in the late 80's. If that is true, then the author must have been in her teens at the time of writing. My hat is off to you Marti if that is indeed the case. For a young author, it was well organized and most of the subplots were pulled together and sewn up. The grammar was good with only a few misused words (typos?). Clean editing and overall, not a bad read. less
