review 1: Read the 1st a while ago, read A Christmas Beau yeasterday and just loved it. Misunderstandings abound as they always do. I love the way Balogh writes, and I was sitting in Disneyland, finishing this as I waited for my daughter to get off a ride, tears pouring down my face at the lovely (but not unexpected) ending. The love story of a lonely man who does not know how to show his feelings, and a young woman who doesn't understand her physical reaction to him, and how they both learn to love.
review 2: 2 dark, lengthy "short" stories that have characters with dark souls. The first story is about a beautiful widow who is socially likeable but personally quite hateful. She has punished herself for reprehensible actions she committed as a young bride. When gentl
... moreemanly-like business man Edgar Downes is entertained in society he expects to be rebuffed by many. He is proud of his achievements in life and has no desire to be anything than what he is- a forceful working man. He has promised his father to marry and produce an heir. Everyone keeps trying to match up this 36 year old bachelor with 18 year old girls. He sees Lady Helena Stapleton, also 36, at a gathering and they have a one night stand. She is so difficult, ornery and unlikeable it was hard to why Edgar bothered with her despite their fiery night together. She is a piece of work. Story 2 is about a widow who jilted her betrothed 8 years ago. Now that her mourning period is over they meet again. She fears he has ulterior motives and once again is afraid and dislikes the somber lord she jilted. He has ulterior motives for coming around and uses her children and spinster sister in law to continue to see them. Judith loves her children and allows them to sway her into accepting Max- the Marquess of Denbigh's invitations. Judith's marriage was awful but her 2 children are her joy. Max plots and connives always remembering the pain he felt when their arranged engagment was broken by Judith's running away to marry a handsome peer. Christmas, forgiving and acceptance are the themes of these atypical holiday stories. Don't read these expecting to feel warm hearted even though there are some beautiful moments of Christmas spirit. less

A Christmas Bride was better than Christmas Beau. I felt the second story dragged a bit.
