review 1: Interesting read - a novel about Typhoid Mary, an Irish immigrant in NYC in the early twentieth century, and the first healthy carrier of typhoid in America. The fear of poverty, the role of women, class, Mary's pride in her cooking and her ability to make a living wage as a cook are central to her story, as is her relationship with Alfred, a shiftless drunk. Also demonstrates the role of the public health system, and the tragedy of Mary's life.
review 2: A very interesting read. I like historical fiction and this read like a very good story while referring to actual events and people. "Typhoid Mary" was a victim of the times and an energetic scientist just as much as were the people who contracted the disease whether because of her or not. She was a very
... morereal character in that she reacted very much as I would have reacted under similar circumstances. She served her time, rebelling a little because of her spirit; she went back to cooking (baking) under a false name just because it was easier than explaining; she was seriously sorry if she had in fact caused the sickness and death attributed to her; and she loved and lost as in real life. Five stars. less
