review 1: It's hard being something that you are not is something that Kylie has to live with every day. She and her sisters had to fight in the civil war to please their father and in memory of their brother. Because of this service, they are able to use their service time against the time they have to spend on their land to get a homestead credit. While her sisters have slipped nicely into this role, Kylie would rather be doing more civilized things. While trying to fix her roof, she gets found out when the land agent Aaron stops by. She tries to play it off, but eventually comes clean. I liked how she tried to please everyone, but eventually wound up doing what she needed for herself. I don't know what it would have been like to have gone through what she did, but it was int... moreeresting to find out. I look forward to finding out what will happen with the family next.I received this book free from the publisher for review.
review 2: This is a fun new series by Mary Connealy and she does not disappoint! I can't wait to read the next one. Three sisters once had a brother who died in the Civil War and their manipulative father convinced them to fight in his place. They masqueraded as boys and got away with it until the war ended and then headed west to homestead. Two of the sisters seem fine with living as a man, one even seems to thrive on the hard work that goes with homesteading, but not Kylie. She is sick and tired of short hair, pants, loneliness and everything else about the uncivilized west. She can't wait to finish her time earning her land, hand her piece of property over to her father and head back to civilization! Tea parties, hats, dresses, people! She goes against her family's 'rules' and wears skirts when she's alone at home and grows her hair long again, although it's tucked out of sight under her hat whenever anyone is around to see. Land Agent Aaron Masterson comes along just in time to help her out of quite a predicament when she has an accident attempting to get off her roof and for a time she convinces him that the property belongs to her brother. How long will she be able to keep her secret? Aaron has come west from a wealthy upbringing in the south after his home is destroyed and his family killed during the war.I enjoyed this book, it's sweet and funny and definitely worth the read, however I did find the ending to be very weak in comparison to the rest of the story. That's disappointing but not a deal breaker. This book has been provided courtesy of Baker Publishing Group and Graf-Martin Communications, Inc.
