Book Review: White Trash Zombie Unchained

White Trash Zombie Unchained by Diana Rowland

My rating: 2 of 5 stars

White Trash Zombie Unchained: White Trash Zombie 6
Reading in chronological order recommended.

In A Nutshell: Angel Crawford, Zombie heroine, returns to challenge the evil Dr. Christie, zombie haters and alligators. An original take on the Zombie theme that usually combines humour and horror successfully. On this occasion, I also found it ridiculous.

The Plot: There is an outbreak of not one but two new viruses. It’s critical as people are being affected very quickly. Enter our kick-ass heroine Angel who means to get to the bottom of it all. Not least because her friends and family are also at risk of the viruses.

The Protagonist(s): Angel Crawford is one of the best, flawed heroines around. She is big-hearted if foul-mouthed. Intelligent but semi-literate. But Angel is carving out her place in the world and working to do better. Despite the cruelty of her upbringing Angel is principled.

You have to like Angel’s character, especially if you started from book one. She has blossomed from a loser into a personality. Undoubtedly, this has been an outstanding series. Full marks, because Rowland’s writing introduced me to a genre I would have otherwise ignored.

But had I started at this book; I would not have read any further. It is longwinded, slow and ridiculous. The world of zombies is fiction. Nonetheless, a logic runs through it but sadly, not in this case.

So, accepting there is a new strain of zombie viruses courtesy of alligators, why did the heroes knowing leave an infected ‘gator’ in the wild? The viruses are infecting humans at a rapid rate, but there is no state of emergency? And not only do we have to wrestle with two new zombie strains, but we learn there are regular zombies, super zombies, and Angel type zombies. Plus ‘gator’ zombies. Phew! Not to mention FBI agents setting out their case to lay people. And out of the blue, Angel falls into a relationship. It’s the only quick thing in the book.

Rowland’s world building is strong. I can smell the bayou. But well written with strong characters is not enough to save this book in my opinion. And that makes me sad because I enjoyed this series and was so looking forward to reading this book.
