review 1: This isn't the type of book that normally piques my interest as it's about the occupation of Nazi Germany and that's not typical of the subject matter I tend to read. That being said, the title pulled me in, so kudos for that. I found certain aspects of the story compelling, however, on the whole, it left me feeling a bit flat. I found the characters realistic and developed, but I failed to really connect or care about them in any significant way. For me, books are all about the characters. I can forgive most flaws, but not connecting with the characters is one I can't overlook. This, though, is purely individual taste, but it does reflect on why I scored the book so low. On the plus side, the alternating timelines were deftly handled and segued nicely into each oth... moreer. A nice enough book but it far from wow-ed me. Not sure if I'd pick up another Horlock book...though perhaps another well-crafted title might tempt me...
review 2: I enjoyed this book. I knew little about the difficulties involved in living in Guernsey during the 2nd World War which this book addressed very well and brought alive the complexities involved. The pains of teenage friendships were very realistically told with a credible voice. Shame some of the words the teenage characters used were from a later decade - surely 'cool' and 'loser' were not adjectives used in the eighties to describe people? But this is just a minor flaw. less

I really don't know how I felt about this book. It was weird. Well written, but very strange.

I actually did not finish this book. The teenage voice of Cat got on my nerves.
