review 1: Mary Kole's WRITING IRRESISTIBLE KIDLIT plunges the same-old-same-old writers craft suggestions to a much deeper and more benefitial level. I've attended many conferences, classes, workshops, and have not found a better book on the craft of writing in a long time. Every page of my book has something highlighted in yellow! Kole also provides not only examples of good writing in each chapter, but writing exercises to do as well. I learned so much from this book. Thank you, Mary Kole!
review 2: "Mockers resent correction, so they avoid the wise." (Proverbs 15:12)Every writer of young adult or middle grade books who wishes to learn how to write better should read this book. I think that includes every aspiring teenage writer, and anyone else who wants to be good a
... moret writing. And everyone who wants to self-publish, this book should be required reading, even if you're still going to self-publish. I myself am still deciding on which road to take.We must be reminded to never stop learning how to write better. I myself love reading lots of how-to books on writing, and this is one of the Best. This book was so so very helpful to me, /Especially/ since it is written by an actual agent who knows the ropes! She talks about the differences of the two audiences, Middle Grade and Young Adult and their different needs, and unspoken qualifications, in the first chapter or two of the book. And then she goes into the thick of the actual writing itself, and what makes an irresistibly good book. From writing characters who have deep desires to unique voice, to style and structure, to writing relationships. This book includes great examples from other recently published YA and MG books (and because of them I've added quite a few more books to my to-read list), very good writing prompts, helpful exercises at the end of the chapters, and lots of writerly quotes that are inspiring. The last few chapters of the book are about writing Advanced Kitlit (themes and questions, etc.), and how to get an agent the right way. There's even a good guide on writing a query letter. It's a very encouraging book. I recommend it highly. The only thing that was annoying was a little language, but there wasn't very much of it and most if not all of it were in quotes from books.Overall I learned a lot from this book and took a few notes. less
