review 1: Mary Lawson has written another novel about the Crow Lake area of Far north Ontario, returning to many of the themes she addressed in Crow Lake: relationships between parents and children, relationships among siblings, damaging life experiences, stubbornness and determination. The only girl among eight brothers, Megan Cartwright took over the running of her family's household from a very young age. Despite her mother's growing incapacity to care for the family and her father's self-imposed isolation at work or in his study, Megan, at 21, finally decides to leave home and start a life of her own. In late 1960s London, she finds satisfying work, makes friends, and thinks infrequently about what is happening back in Struan, Ontario. Then three years after leaving her family, ... moreMegan gets a phone call from her older brother, Tom, and she has to weigh her independence against her feelings of loyalty and love in response to the chaos into which her unfortunate family has fallen. Recommended.
review 2: I stayed up until midnight last night reading this, enjoyed it very much, despite the very frustrating and dysfunctional characters and rather predictable ending. Mary Lawson writes about families that seem like you know them and want to understand get to know them better. The members of this family are each dealing with their own tragedies and cannot seem to function anymore, except Megan, who escapes to a new life in England and her younger brother, Adam, left at age 4 to fend for himself. Maybe a message of patience and tolerance/acceptance for those who suffer from inner turmoil? Good read indeed! less
