review 1: The book starts off with a child's fascination with stars. It describes how anything can be a star if you were willing to make it so. No matter if its in the sky or on paper, the author makes it a point to show that every star is important and worth something. Stars can come from anywhere and be any size or color, a star is a star and that wont change. The children in the book go around and search for all kinds of stars and make sure to always have one with them. When I first read this book I thought that the author might be using the stars as a symbol for children or people in general. No matter what size or color a person may be, they are still important; I feel like this could be one of the messages the author was trying to portray. There wasn't a lot of detail in the i... morellustrations which made it easier to focus on the text. Because of this, the reader is able to hear the story and then observe the illustrations which support the text. The artist used very simple pictures to show what is being said and with light coloring. This helps the reader feel more relaxed through the book so its not so overwhelming with bright colors and abstract details. The simplicity adds to the book in that it supports the story in the best way it can.
review 2: A more inspirational type children's book nominated for a California Young Reader medal this year is found in Stars. There really isn't a story here. It reads more like poetry. Finding power and happiness in the stars is the main premise. My favorite part is how the beginning flap of the book has a daytime illustration. We end the book with a night sky filled with stars. Cute book. But, not my favorite California Young Reader Medal Nominee. less
