review 1: I think the author nailed how it felt to be a kid. Too young to understand about "adult" things, but way more mature and observant than most adults want to notice. I could feel the sticky heat of the summer, the longing to be able to get out and just be on my own on a hot day. I remember the household chores, the mandatory politeness to elders. She also captured the uneasiness I felt as I started to witness grown-ups saying and doing things that I didn't understand, things that made me feel inexplicably bad in the pit of my stomach. The story was good, but I give her writing a "very good".
review 2: I have read every book that Mary McGarry Morris has written and will continue to do so, however, I can only give this book 3 stars out of 5. The parents in this boo
... morek taught and raised Nellie to have integrity, tell the truth and do what is right. When she wants to do just that, no one will believe her. The father that she adored was a very weak man and I thought for the most part, ineffective as a parent. The mother seems to shoulder the weight of the whole family on her shoulders because of a weak husband. All the while a man sits in jail for a crime Nellie knows he may not have committed.I kept waiting for this child, of only 13, to step up and do the right thing. I was getting mad at the parents who appeared side-tracked with their own issues. Thank goodness she takes her upbringing to heart, bypasses the dysfunctional adults in her life and comes up the winner. I felt that this book took way too long to get to the point and that frustrated me as a reader. I will look forward to Ms. Morris' next novel though. She is still one of our better authors and I have enjoyed each and every one of her other books. less

Meh. A coming of age story with frustrating characters and an unsatisfying ending.
