review 1: In the Afterword, Miley says she was inspired by Josephine Tey's "Brat Farrar." In fact, it seems that Miley reworked Tey's plot, even to the point of similar villains. So after reading one book, you can tell who the murderer is in the other. I don't know if it was an intentionally sly reference, but Tey's book centers around horse breeding, while Miley's hero makes a point of saying she hates horses. Personal note: Since I grew up on the rocky coast of Oregon where the story takes place, it was good to be able to visualize the setting. That certainly added to the pleasure of reading the book. I wonder whether Mary Miley knows there really is a Dexter, Oregon, even though she says the town is fictional. Of course, the real Dexter is 100 plus miles or so inland and n... moreot on the ocean.
review 2: I thoroughly enjoyed Mary Miley's story of Leah Randall, a vaudeville actress who takes up the role of a lifetime: Jessamine Carr. A missing-presumed-dead heiress who disappeared seven years ago. She is about to return on the eve of her 21st birthday to claim her fortune. Every time I thought I'd "called the ending," Miley thwarted me. I was along for the ride the entire time, and I think most readers will love this trip to Prohibition-era Oregon as they discover what really happened to Jessie Carr. less

I liked the setting- 1920's vaudeville, but the dialogue was stilted and the ending left me hanging.

A little juvenile and predictable in places, but overall entertaining.
