review 1: I really enjoyed this book. I liked how the poetry in this book is free verse, so I could tell what was happening the story more effectively. I'm not the best at decoding poetry, but since this book is free verse, I was able to understand what part of the story I was at in the book. I love reading about the Holocaust because I find it a very interesting topic, so I was very engaged into the book throughout the whole story. I would definitely recommend this book!
review 2: I generally shy away from books written about solemn topics such as the Holocaust and I would have probably never picked this book up if it hadn't been a Texas Bluebonnet Nominee. I would have really missed out by not reading about Odette and her accounts of living during the Nazi invasion
... more of France. Written in journal/poetry form, Odette is such an endearing character, I wanted so many times to swoop in and save this little girl myself. We meet Odette right before her father leaves to join the French military to fight the Nazi party. We follow her for over 5 years as she is made to wear the gold star on her clothing, is hidden during the deadly Black Thursday, begins to live hiding in plain sight as a Christian girl in the French countryside, and eventually begins living back in Paris with her family after the war has ended. Macdonald has created a strong, brave, and kind character - everything Odette wanted to be. Don't miss the Author's Note where you get to see how the author came to write a book about this topic and Odette Meyers specifically. less
