review 1: Ok, it took long enough to come out but I guess they wanted to reflect the actual yr and a half they were under the dome before telling us the story! Anyway, it was very dark. Darker than all the others. It was completely focused on war, psychotic were arachnid Skip, and starting over. In this book there were unexpected deaths, and amazing sorcery! I have come to the conclusion that Skip should've been killed 2 books ago! Everyone pitches in to stop him and he is so far gone, ther's no remorse, SMH!! Don't where they're going with the following book, but I hope its good.
review 2: Overall, it's a very grim book with a few typical MJD snarks to lighten the mood here and there. This series has a lot more depth than MJD's other books, perhaps due to the partnershi... morep with Alongi. But this particular installation in the series was also a bit lean, despite the dark, often sad, and desperate situation the characters find themselves in. The emotions just didn't hit home. Or at least the sad ones didn't. I certainly felt the desperation, confusion, awkward adolescence, parental drama, etc. But when the worst of tragedy struck I was surprised, but not shaken up. The characters are in shock and then need to move forward out of necessity, so their grief never felt real to me. It was a weird, mixed bag of a story, all jumbled up. I still think Jennifer is one of the best teen voices I've read. Her bravery and humor both feel real. But she and the other characters got a bit lost in the war. Also, while I generally commend authors who don't shy away from the grim nature of war and battle, I'm not at all sure this battle was necessary. The big moral triumph felt preachy. And the books is really depressing for both kids and grown-ups. But I didn't want to put it down and would recommend fans of the series to read it (if older than 15 at least). Like I said, a mixed bag. And the big twist at the end and the preview of the next book indicate more of the same. The world has discovered dragons, and it's not happy about it. less
