review 1: When a memoir becomes a life-lecture? There are messages in the story that could be shown, beautifully, without being told. It's certainly poignant, underneath the over-writing, but could have been powerful as a narrative were it not for the: "this is what I'm going to tell you, this is what happened, these are the lessons I learned" approach to each section.I hadn't heard of Massimo Gramellini but was aware he is a celebrity in Italy, perhaps broader Europe, and this is commercial fiction that definitely has a large market. And I do admire how much the author seems to care about sharing his story to help others. And there are some fabulous scenes and cameo characters that did keep me going. I read it during the middle of the night, a second consecutive night of insomnia, ... moreand it was a good companion for that headspace.
Best seller indeed. less
