review 1: The book starts with such promise in both story and style. The fairy tale builds, the plot twists, but then, like the rooms in the house, the narrative goes on and on and on. It become repetitive, the transformations of the characters become meaningless, and, in the end, the reader just wants it all to end. Truth be told, I was ready for it to end a good one hundred pages before it did. And the Bear was the only character worth my compassion.

... moreat keeps me from giving this a full five out of five is the voice of the narrator. The narrator is very well written – and I’m positive the voice was entirely deliberate on Bell’s part – but it left me cold, and at times sapped a lot of the energy from otherwise fantastic scenes. Still, it’s a book absolutely worth checking out, and an author worth following. less
