review 1: This is a truly remarkable piece of writing. Bondurant was an FSU undergraduate and plans to appear in Tallahassee on September 18, 2014, as part of the University's Seven Days of Opening Nights cultural and arts festival. His descriptions of swimming in extremely cold and deep waters opened a whole new world for me. And the climatic moment in which he describes a storm of almost supernatural ferocity is a work of art.Highly recommended. I was entranced.
review 2: The problem with this book is that I recognise how unique and beautiful it is. I understand why people strongly love it - but I also understnad why people strongly hate it.I haven't had a hard time completing a book like this since I've been in high school and we were assigned boring books that we all
... more had to force ourselves to read - and I am not talking about classic literatture because those were my strongest inspirations. It's taken me 3 weeks and I'm not even halfway through this novel, and I WANT to finish it, but it puts me to sleep (literally, once at Starbucks with my dose of caffein!).I appreciate this novel but that doesn't mean I like it.This book holds all the elements that I am attracted to but somehow fails to keep my interest. It is hard for me to to give up on a work of art, but I am going to have to take a breather from this one and perhaps re-attempt in a few months.. (on that note - self reminder I was on P.121 - that's the record to beat next time) less

I'm only 30 pages in, but I am captivated by the author's prose.
