review 1: I've wanted to read this book ever since I saw the movie Shameless. Unfortunately for this book, this is one of the few times that the movie is better. Overall the writing was not bad. The author was able to bring the narrative to life. I also did not have a problem with the violence; that's what it was like back then and I applaud the author for not shying away from the more gruesome truths.Although the writing was good the organization was awful. I was constantly struggling to put events into chronological order, this is not something I want to struggle with for an entire book. The main issue I have with this book is its inability to flow. The entire book is a mesh of stories jumble together with no specific rhyme or reason. I lack to see the point of Anderson and the ma... morejority of the time I found myself skimming the sections that included him; there was just so much irrelevant detail!
review 2: Overall, I really enjoyed this book. I like the way Nick Cave adapted it to screen also. What took some getting used to were the chronology jumps. I read the first few chapters before realizing the continuity changed along with the POV. I essentially had to go back and start over, but once I got into it, the shifts were almost seamless. Definitely a book I would recommend. It provides interesting insight into the Prohibition era from the standpoint of those intrinsically involved but also very much apart from the traditional 'organized crime' image portrayed by the media. less
