review 1: Had potential but it got absurd. It was matter of excesses. The author simply went overboard on just about everything. For example, early on the hero is shot three times (three! count 'em) in the stomach fending off Iranian terrorists, and a week later he is back in the saddle again. Then he gets shot in the arm a few days later. A day later he gets nicked in the head with bullet yet he can still respond and fight like a Ninja warrior in hand-to-hand combat. Speaking of combat, I stopped counting the Iranian deaths inflicted by the hero after it went over 90. No typo. Ninety. But what was most annoying is that the hero is portrayed as a man committed to avenge evil doers and protect the innocent. Yet in one scene he murders - literally murders- an unsuspecting French ag... moreent who happens to be following those nasty little Iranians. He did not want the Frenchman (an ally) to compromise his mission and so he kills him - despite his bullet wounds- only to discover that the agent was his mentor and friend from many years ago. After thirty seconds of regret, our hero gets back to the mission. To my mind, the hero(?) was in the same league as the heartless Iranians. And so it went, death after death, impossible odds, absurd situations.
review 2: From the biographical information, it would seem the author would know what he's writing about. I found the writing itself to be lacking and always knew SPOILER ALERT the female lead was one of the bad guys. The book reminds me of action movies where the big hero never feels pain and never slows down after suffering injuries that in real life would hospitalize him. Toward the end, the scenes became repetitive and the body count and gore factors were so over the top that I could hardly continue reading. Also, I prefer not to have to read the name of every street when there's a chase inside a city... less
