review 1: I listened to this, because I had just read the review of Matthew Quirk's new book (The Directive), and it sounded so good. I thought that this book was entertaining as a thriller and positively scary as something written by a former journalist who has covered criminal investigations around Washington. "Everyone has a price," and it seems like all of Washington is for sale...may be fiction here, but the possibilities are chilling.
review 2: Quirk has done a genuinely good job here. The prose is slick and enticing and the lead protagonist flawed enough (Mike Ford is a former con-artist trying to go straight, and is very nearly there) that his edge is sharp and serrated enough to pique our interest from line one. ... moretting the stakes high and then dropping back a little to explain how we got there, but never revealing too much. Ford is hit from all sides - professional (his job and his future out of prison), personal (father and lover) and the relentless pressure on him never lets up. Quirk's research is excellent, but his background suggests it ought to be, and his storytelling in a fresh and interesting area is compelling. All the characters are fully realised – all have very obvious wants and desires and the conflict between them is ramped up by both events and the stakes. Tension is maintained throughout and the final sequence is what every good, intelligent thriller should be - impossible to put down. less

This book was so silly. It was just so cliche and not well written. Like really bad john Grisham.
