review 1: The word "hero" is so easily thrown around these days. So much so, in fact, that it has become watered down. In Matthew Salesses's novella, The Last Repatriate, Teddy returns home from Korea and is called a hero by everyone, yet he harbors the secrets of his captivity. Those secrets are that he did whatever he could to survive and return home, even if that meant turning against his country and his government in word but not in his heart. Simply put, this is a harrowing tale of what happens the soldiers and civilians during times of war and how tenuous our beliefs and our loves truly are.
review 2: I really wish someone had edited down the use of the phrase "I reckon" in dialogue considering it's used over forty times in a book that's roughly 70 pages (yes, I co
... moreunted. It was that distracting). Maybe I am the only one bothered by this (probably), and maybe it's because I'm from the South, but 40 times is about 35 uses too many. That said, the novella is pretty good. The first chapter is the best and could almost stand alone. It made me wonder what part was published in Pleiades.I kind of like the size of these little Nouvelle Books. They're perfect for reading on the subway and it would nice to have a bunch that were a series or something. I'm not the hugest fan of the french flaps though, especially for a book this small. less
