review 1: This was a refreshing read. I'm glad to have discovered McHugh. She writes with a touching clarity, and although several of the stories in this collection have a feminine tint, the range of her literary voice is broad (some also have male protagonists). If you don't like stories that leave large pieces unexplained, this isn't for you. In other words, it is seldom explained in any detail what it was to have brought about the "apocalypse" in the short stories that tackle that genre. Some of the stories aren't about that but are very well done nonetheless. I enjoy sci fi that doesn't change our contemporary world so much that it requires a suspension of our disbelief, and McHugh does this well. She has a great sense for pulling out that stark, near-nihilistic way that ... morewe, as humans, often just act on impulses without much meaningful introspection - that this is how our world moves forward, for better or for worse. "The Kingdom of the Blind" might be my favourite short story about artificial intelligence that I have read.
review 2: Only the first and last stories deal with an apocalypse in any real way. In the others it's either just mentioned briefly or is completely absent. I'd say the common thread running through all of the stories is change. Each of the main characters has had a significant change happen in their lives. I enjoyed all of them for different reasons, though the one I was most interested to read ended up being my least favorite. less

Lots of grammatical errors' words left out, things like that, but a nice quick read.

Like most collections, some good stories and some not so good.

Some definitely inspired works, but many endings fell flat.
