review 1: The first couple of these stories were both science fiction and literary and I enjoyed them. However, I can't say that for the majority of the collection, which seemed to decrease in sf content and increase in literary opacity with each story. I did find interesting the titular story, in which a mother and daughter must fend for themselves after the unnamed apocalypse, particularly as a contrast with "Lot" by Ward Moore, in which a father makes a similar choice at the beginning of an apocalypse but for similar, yet slightly different reasons.
review 2: It was really good to read a book that didn't rely on zombies for its base. Not all the stories were great but they all had differing views on life after the Apocalypse. It was good to read a book where all the s... moretories are significantly different even though they are themed, each story was rich in its quick character development and left me wanting more. i would definitely read a sequel to this book. less
