review 1: I have to say first, I have not read other reviews so my viewpoint has not been colored. As a first novel I found myself hoping Maureen Lindley will write more. I believe because of the author's background in psychotherapy, fashion design, photography and antiques, she brought an amazing amount of detail together wrapped in the honest emotions of a very unique individual. There was an honesty about the description of the life of "Eastern Jewel" that was non-judgmental and while I never felt I had to take sides either way with any of her behavior, I found this a fasinating read. I also again counted my blessings at not having to face war first hand.
review 2: I really enjoyed the story here however I found the descriptive language rather incessant and unnece
... moressary a lot of the time. That would be my only criticism of this book. However I notice a lot of other criticism revolves around Eastern Jewel's/Yoshiko's personality and people were commenting that they found it very hard to sympathise with the main character. Upon reading I noticed the way the author stresses her unlikeable, cold nature and so kept that in the back of my mind acknowledging that it wasn't necessary for me to pity her. Not too sure if others agree with me there but I definitely enjoyed the book! less

Interesting to read of Asia before and during WWII but not a particularly admirable or happy life.

Great character who may have been a victim of the times, but never lost her power.

An open-ended novel that kept me thinking what really happened to the main hero.
