review 1: The back of the book made it seem like the book was going to be about the main character's experience in Manzanar, the Japanese internment camp during World War II. While this book did include that, the main character was released from Manzanar about halfway through the book. What followed was a very rambling half of the book that included plot lines that just served as a distraction from the main plot lines. I thought that it was an okay book, but it would've been better if it didn't include so many tangents.
review 2: Satomi is the daughter of a Japanese mother and a Caucasian father in 1930's California. When her father is killed at Pearl Harbor, her mother is devastated, but they attempt to continue running their tomato farm. They are rounded up in the
... more shameful event that resulted in Japanese/Americans being sent to internment camps after all their possessions were impounded. Lindley writes a powerful story, but I had trouble getting engaged with Satomi. Like all the characters in the book, I was more drawn to her mother, who is a very charismatic person. I prefer non-fiction on topics such as this. less

Really liked most of this book but thought ending chapters were not up to par with the rest.
