review 1: This book chronicles the history of the modern meat industry in America over the last 100 years, from packaged box beef to factory farming to the rise of big poultry to the faux-organic movement. This is no Sinclair's "The Jungle", no Pollan's "Omnivore's Dilemma". The author is very careful not to paint any aspect of the meat industry in a negative light. As such, it comes off a bit like it was underwritten by the industry (though I'm sure it wasn't).
review 2: Ogle has a pretty good structure here, presenting the evolution of the US meat industry with the growth and change of the US population. She also does well to center these changes around people who were instrumental in these changes. However, the history falls apart for me as Ogle makes it almost too
... more clear that she sees most government intervention as a hindrance to the development of the meat industry. Maybe I wouldn't feel so annoyed by this, however, if she didn't see fit to spend so many pages bashing Upton Sinclair. less

Brimming with information, and historical eye openers, good stuff.
