review 1: Not being a boy, I needed a little insight into my two little men that live in my house.I really liked this book - it confirmed a lot of the common sense things that I already knew and emphasized things that I could better. Because of reading this book, I have quit stressing over "where are the boys at" every time they go outside and I revel in their ability to explore and spend time with friends. I appreciate that Meeker acknowledges the importance of God and spirituality in boys. Too often that is brushed aside and I am glad that she didn't. I love being a mom to boys and this book just made me all the more excited to watch them grow up and turn into men. They are doing a great job so far, and I'm not doing too bad myself.
review 2: While I agree with the
... more fundamental principals of the book, the author uses anecdotal evidence of particular situations she has come across to support broad theories on parenting. There are some citations in the book, but very few. Most of the principals the author is promoting (religion as a foundation for morality, spending more time with your children, being an example for your children's behavior) I agree with, but I don't need 300 pages to teach common sense parenting fundamentals. Given the author is a doctor, familiar with scientific method, I would have appreciated more sources to support her theory. She cherry-picks individual clinical cases she has worked with for the foundation of her argument whereas a scientific study which proves her claims are more than theory would have been more effective for the reader.I found the books Einstein Never Used Flash Cards, The Whole-Brain Child, How Children Succeed, and NurtureShock to be much more useful, and also as sources of information that back up the prinicpals being presented with scientific evidence. less

I didn't quite finish this so I had to skim the ending. It had great information and ideas, though.

This book is more about moms than it is about boys... My wife couldn't even finish it.
