review 1: After reading and loving Megan Chance's Inamorata, I decided to commit to reading everything (or almost everything) that she's written. While this one didn't disappoint, I didn't love it quite as much as my first venture into her work. Leonie is a complicated, engaging heroine (who should absolutely be played by Brit Marling if this is ever made into a movie - someone please make this book into a movie), who is more of a dreamy blank space shaped by those around her (her father and husband) at the beginning of the narrative. Leonie, who has ambitions of being a Native American scholar with her husband, Junius (also like her deceased father before) finds a mummy one day, and this event is the catalyst for her life being turned upside down and inside out. Leonie isn't always... more likable, but the important thing here is that she doesn't have to be: she's interesting enough for the duration, and this is something of a belated coming of age tale. Instead of continuing to be defined by the men around her and those who have gone before her, always obedient and in their shadow, Leonie's mysterious connection to the mummy she discovered, and a new arrival in her life (her stepson) force her to find out who she really is, discover secrets of her past and present, and what she really wants for herself from her life. I enjoyed her growth, even if it seemed somewhat unevenly paced, and some of the turns and decisions in the narrative were a bit culturally questionable. The bottom line here is that my fondness for Leonie and Megan Chance's writing outweighed all the small questionable things; this book is better than the sum of its parts.
review 2: I LIKED this book but omg...enough with the repetitious angst. Story setting in the Pacific NW during the late 19th century good. Plot good, Characters interesting...but like THE GOLDFINCH I got so tired of him repeating constantly on should or should he not return the picture... In this story she constantly has this calling/ dream/feeling...page after page .After some bones in the bank of their river expose a burial basket with a mummy inside.... Mystery and love story. ps...this was one of those Amazon come ons for $1.99. I pushed the button and of course it said $4.99.Oh well, I did enjoy it. less
