review 1: Despite the poor reviews I really enjoyed this book. It gave Venice a really creepy atmosphere and I liked the way the different seasons in Venice, from an end of a hot summer to a damp and dreary Autumn paralleled the change in mood of the main characters optimistic start to the insidious evil which creeps into their lives. Other reviewers criticised the book for its innapropriate relationships. I think it was necessary for some of the characters to have this background. Distasteful things happen in life, and I think life has to be reflected in literature. Many of Dickens' novels cover similar distasteful subjects as prostitution or exploitation of children etc.
review 2: Although this book was well written, it simply was not my cup of tea. It had a n interes
... moreting concept as far as there being a succubus or muse. A little scary, as a matter of fact, that one person could hold so much power over another. Hard to imagine that someone could be so inspiring to another that they create an unbelievable work of art that can never be matched. Everything else seems to fail in comparison. What, at first, seems to be something victims can't live without, is somethng that will actually cause them mental anguish and despair. less

I gave it 3 1/2 stars really. A little creepiness, but still good.
