review 1: Considering that I have read quite a few Hart books recently, I have to say this one isn't like the others. I still enjoyed it. I could tell there was a story about "those Tierney Boys", and I was waiting for the whole story to come out. Of course it took to the very end for that. In the mean time, Hart does a great job of painting a dysfunctional family, that somehow all gets along. One can't help feeling the frustration Janelle feels with helping her Grandmother thru the final stage of her life, while trying to take care of her son, and placating her other extended family. As much as Gabe didn't want to get involved, when Janelle came back, the two finally find some common ground and become friends. Life in a small town, where everyone knows everyone, and everything. The en... moreding was a bit of a surprise, when we discover who fired the shot at Andy, and why.Still, pretty good.
review 2:  There are no secrets that time does not reveal. - Jean RacineJanelle and her 12 year-old son Bennett move to Pennsylvania to take care of Janelle's grandmother Nan. Nan took Janelle in when she was a rebellious 17 year-old, was there when she needed her, and Janelle wants to return the favor now that Nan is elderly and has a brain tumor.Living next door to Nan are the Tierney males, which includes Gabe - Janelle's heartthrob from when she lived there previously.THE FAVOR alternates between current day happenings and events from the past. It is not an easy tale to read, emotionally. Not only is there Nan's current day condition but the events from the past can be heartbreaking.Characters are well described but not always sympathetic. Small town lower middle class life is described in knowing detail. The story feels real, like a true-life accounting rather than a fictional depiction.I am glad that I read this tale of secrets and pain from author Hart but I don't think it would be one I would re-read. It is too unsettling and painful.NOTE: I received a copy of this book in exchange for my honest review. less
