review 1: This book is a retelling of Cinderella, in a way. Its more of the fact that the story tells you of the main character, Gisela, mistreatment rather then show it. It's more focused on the relationship of the Duke, Valten, and this girl. Now I love retellings of Cinderella, or any fairytale for that matter, but for this book it kind of fell flat for me. The author has a good story but she more tells you then shows you what is going on and the breaking up of sections at time can be odd and not flow. Example: in one scene Gisela is trying not to fall asleep and she's talking about that to the reader and within the same paragraph she had not only fallen asleep but again woke up (without the reader hardly knowing). So That annoyed me. Also there is a difference b/t being nice and... more being smart. Our main character gets tricked many times by not only her family but other "bad" guys and she justifies it by trying to be nice (as in she was being nice to them, and that just made their job that much easier to capture her). I would go more into this problem but later in the story, Gisela even admits this problem, then goes on by saying "Sorry" every time's she speaks. Anyway, this was a fun read, will I ever re-read it? doubtful but it did pass the time.
review 2: I always loved reading different versions and retellings of fairy tales. This one, for sure, was one of the best! I really liked the characters names, and I agree with Margaretha when she says Gisela's name is so pretty! I'm pretty sure I didn't read the books in order, but I don't really care, because I don't think any other book can get much better than this. However, I am prepared to be surprised when I read the other books in this "series". Anybody know which one is the first book? less
